Algebraic Expressions

In this lesson let's try to understand on Algebraic Expressions. When we read on this lession we bassically end up in reading on Coefficient of Algebraic Expressions.
Coefficient of Algebraic Expressions:
An algebraic expression contains numerals, variables and mathematical operation signs like +, - , × and ÷. Variable is an unknown quantity and alphabets are used to represent variables.
Coefficient of a Variable
The real number that is placed to the left of a variable is the coefficient of that variable. Like 4y, here 4 is placed to the left of y. Hence 4 is the coefficient of y. Remember that there cannot be a + or – sign between the variable and its coefficient.
The coefficient may be any real number. It may be an integer (positive or negative), fraction or decimal number.
Coefficients are also referred as the numerical part of a variable term. The numerical factor of an algebraic term is its coefficient. For example the numerical coefficient of the algebraic term 3x is 3. Hence the coefficient of 3x is 3. The coefficient of x is 1. The coefficient of ½ x is ½
If a variable term does not contain any number but only the variable, then its coefficient is 1.For example, in the algebraic expression t² + 5t, the coefficient of the term t² is 1.
Like Terms: In algebraic expressions, the terms with same variable raised to the same power are called as Like terms. The like terms must have same variable but the coefficients may be different. This means6x and -9x are like terms since they have same variable x although their coefficients are different
